About Central Hudson

Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation (Central Hudson) is a regulated transmission and distribution utility serving approximately 315,000 electric customers and 90,000 natural gas customers in a defined service territory of New York State’s Mid-Hudson River Valley. Central Hudson delivers natural gas and electricity across a territory that extends from the suburbs of metropolitan New York City north to the Capital District at Albany, covering eight counties in the region.

Central Hudson Electricity & Gas Options

Central Hudson delivers electricity and natural gas within its service territory. Like other utilities operating in New York’s deregulated market, Central Hudson customers can also choose an energy service company (ESCO) for their electricity or natural gas supply. Energy rates through Central Hudson can change based on market conditions, and Central Hudson publishes information on how its rates affect customer bills.

Utility vs. ESCO(CPG): What’s the Difference?

Category Utility City Power & Gas (CPG)
What they handle Your utility takes care of getting electricity or natural gas from the local distribution system to your home. CPG handles the supply of the electricity or gas you use and provides competitive energy pricing with transparent plan options.
Delivery system The utility remains responsible for the infrastructure that makes delivery possible, including the local poles, wires, and gas pipes. ESCOs is not responsible for maintaining the delivery infrastructure. Your existing utility continues to manage the poles, wires, and pipes serving your property.
How rates work If you remain on the utility’s default supply, you receive its standard rate, which is typically adjusted every two weeks in a month as market conditions change. With a CPG fixed-rate plan, the supply price is locked for the duration of your agreement. Available terms include 3, 6, and 12 months, helping keep the rate from moving with the market during that period.
Available choices Customers in the utility’s territory generally receive a single standard supply rate when they use the default utility option. ESCOs offers a range of plans, including 100% renewable options at affordable rates. Customers can choose flexible terms of 3, 6, 9, or 12 months.
Making a switch Your utility is automatically associated with your address for delivery and default supply when you have not selected another supplier. You decide whether to move your energy supply to ESCOs. You can also switch back to your previous supplier later without changing or interrupting the utility service that delivers energy to your home.

Energy Deregulation in New York

Energy deregulation in New York separates the responsibility for delivering energy from the choice of who supplies it. Your local utility continues to maintain the delivery system and respond to outages, but you aren’t required to purchase your electricity or natural gas supply from that utility’s default rate. You can select another supplier instead.

The availability of competing suppliers means customers can compare different energy plans and pricing structures. Choosing a supplier is completely optional. If you don’t make a selection, your account remains with the utility’s default supply service, where the rate can move up or down with changes in the energy market.

CPG offers another option for customers who prefer a predictable supply price. Its fixed-rate plans keep the agreed-upon price in place throughout the selected term rather than having it fluctuate with the market. Available terms include 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, along with affordable, renewable-friendly pricing options, giving customers flexibility when choosing a plan that fits their budgeting needs.

FAQs

1. Central Hudson’s territory stretches from NYC suburbs to Albany. Does my rate differ depending on where in that stretch I live?

Your Central Hudson delivery rates are based on the utility service and rate schedule that applies to your account, not simply how close you are to New York City or Albany. Central Hudson operates as one regulated utility, although different rate schedules can apply depending on the type of service and customer.

What can vary by location is the availability of competitive energy suppliers and specific offers. If you are considering an ESCO, check the plans available for your address rather than assuming that an offer available in one part of Central Hudson’s territory is available everywhere.

  • Check your specific service address.
  • Compare electricity and natural gas offers separately.
  • Review the supply rate and contract terms before enrolling.

2. What areas does Central Hudson serve?

Central Hudson serves customers across New York’s Mid-Hudson River Valley. Its territory covers a defined area between the suburbs north of New York City and communities toward the Capital District near Albany.

Central Hudson currently serves approximately 315,000 electric customers and 90,000 natural gas customers. Its service territory includes communities across parts of several counties in the Hudson Valley.

Because Central Hudson’s electric and natural gas territories are not identical, the type of utility service available can depend on your specific address.

3. What does Central Hudson still handle if I switch to an ESCO?

Switching to an ESCO like CPG changes your energy supplier, but Central Hudson remains responsible for delivering the electricity or natural gas to your property.

Central Hudson continues to operate and maintain the utility delivery system and remains the company customers contact for delivery-related issues such as outages and emergencies.

The roles are straightforward:

  • ESCO: supplies the electricity or natural gas.
  • Central Hudson: delivers that energy through its utility system.
  • Customer: chooses the eligible supplier for the supply portion.

Your physical connection to Central Hudson does not change when you switch suppliers.

4. Does choosing an ESCO affect my Central Hudson bill?

Yes, choosing an ESCO can change the supply portion of your bill, but Central Hudson’s delivery charges still apply. The utility continues to deliver your electricity or natural gas through its distribution system after you switch suppliers.

Your energy costs can therefore be viewed as two main parts:

  • Supply: the cost of the electricity or natural gas provided by your chosen supplier.
  • Delivery: the charges associated with delivering that energy through Central Hudson’s system.

If you choose CPG, the supply portion reflects the terms and rate of your CPG plan. Delivery charges continue to come from Central Hudson.

When comparing plans, look at the total cost and contract terms, not just the advertised supply rate.

5. Can I switch back to Central Hudson’s default rate after choosing an ESCO?

Yes. You can return to Central Hudson’s supply service after choosing an ESCO, subject to the terms of your supplier agreement. Choosing a competitive supplier does not permanently change your utility service.

Before switching back, review your current ESCO contract for any cancellation requirements, contract conditions, or applicable fees.

Central Hudson remains your delivery utility throughout the process, so changing your energy supplier does not require a new electric or gas connection.

6. I get both gas and electric from Central Hudson. Can I switch just one to CPG?

Yes. You can choose a competitive supplier for your electricity or natural gas while keeping the other service with Central Hudson. You do not have to switch both energy supplies at the same time.

For example, you could choose CPG for your electricity supply while continuing to receive your natural gas supply through Central Hudson. This allows you to compare the two services separately before deciding whether to switch both.

You can compare:

  • Electricity supply options
  • Natural gas supply options
  • Fixed and variable rates
  • Contract length and applicable fees

Central Hudson continues to provide the delivery service for both electricity and natural gas regardless of which eligible supplier you choose.
