How to Compare Your Energy Options?
Comparing energy plans can help you find an option that fits your household’s budget and energy needs. In New York and Pennsylvania, eligible customers can choose an energy supplier while their local utility continues to deliver electricity or natural gas, maintain the lines and respond to outages. The choices available depend on where you live and which utility serves your home.
Before switching suppliers or renewing a plan, here are a few things to consider:
- Compare the rate: Check how much you’ll pay for the energy you use. Electricity rates are usually listed in cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while natural gas rates may be listed in dollars per hundred cubic feet (CCF) or per therm, depending on the provider. Compare rates using the same unit and check whether additional charges apply.
- Understand fixed and variable rates: A fixed-rate plan keeps your supply rate the same for the agreed term, while a variable-rate plan can change over time. A fixed rate may offer more predictable energy costs, whereas a variable rate may rise or fall with market conditions.
- Check the contract terms: Look at the length of the agreement, any early termination fees, renewal conditions and what happens when the contract ends. Some plans may have introductory rates that change after a specified period.
- Review your utility bill: Your bill can help you understand your typical energy consumption and current supply charges. Use your average monthly usage to compare plans more realistically instead of looking at the advertised rate alone.
- Look beyond the price: Some suppliers offer renewable energy options or other plan features. Check the terms carefully to understand what is included and whether it costs extra.
