How Renewable Energy Works [For Small Business]

Power your small business with energy that benefits the environment, the community, and your savings too. Together, businesses can make a lasting difference in fighting climate change and creating a sustainable future. But what does it look like to make the switch to renewable energy?

Renewable energy on the rise

Renewable energy is generated from sources that never run out. They naturally replenish and are more abundant compared to fossil fuels. The five major types include solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and biomass. You’ve probably seen them generate energy through either solar panels, wind turbines, and dams.

With policy changes and innovations in energy storage, renewable energy is on the rise as costs have gone down. And over 300 companies with RE100 are making the commitment to go 100 percent green. Businesses big and small are on the path towards limiting greenhouse gases from fossil fuels – and yours can too!

What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?

When you sign up for our green energy plan, you’ll notice that it also comes with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). These are used to show the amount of renewable energy generated to the grid. One REC is equal to one-megawatt hour of electricity generated by a renewable source.

Why do we have RECs?

When it comes to the power grid, it’s difficult to tell where electricity is exactly sourced from. The energy that’s delivered by the transmission lines is mixed in from different generators, ranging from natural gas power plants to wind and solar farms. RECs were created to claim that you purchased renewable energy and are being generated on your request.

Once you buy a REC, it’s individual to you and can’t be used by anyone else. They have their own trackable set of numbers that retire. It’s especially valuable if you’re unable to install solar panels and other renewable technologies. RECs also encourage the growth of more renewable energy production and environmental projects.

How can RECs show your company’s values?

RECs allow you to verify that you’re committed to green energy.  It gives consumers the reassurance that you’re focused on meeting sustainability goals. Having a purpose-driven mission also boosts your corporate social responsibility (CSR). More customers support and trust a company that’s dedicated to doing good for the planet and the community.
